Why the Network Layer Matters

Enterprise LAN Infrastructure for Modern Organizations

Modern enterprises demand far more than basic connectivity. Video conferencing, cloud applications, ERP systems, VoIP, IP surveillance, and hundreds of wireless access points all compete for bandwidth and network resources simultaneously. Poor infrastructure design means dropped calls, slow applications, security vulnerabilities, and costly unplanned downtime.

AE Connect delivers a complete, layered enterprise networking solution - from access-layer PoE+ switches for endpoints to managed Layer 3 core switches, fiber optic backbone, and Cat6A structured cabling - all engineered for the performance and reliability that enterprise operations demand.

  • Multi-layer switching: Access, Distribution, and Core in one solution
  • VLAN segmentation for departments, guests, IoT, and security zones
  • Layer 3 inter-VLAN routing, QoS, IGMP Snooping, SNMP management
  • 10GbE SFP+ uplinks for high-speed core and distribution aggregation
  • Campus fiber backbone with single-mode and multimode support
  • Made in India with ISO-certified manufacturing and pan-India support
Enterprise Networking: Key Facts

Common Pain Points

Common Enterprise Network Challenges

IT teams, network consultants, and system integrators regularly encounter these critical problems in enterprise LAN design and deployment. AE Connect products address each challenge with purpose-built hardware.

Bandwidth Saturation at the Core

Cloud applications, 4K video conferencing, large file transfers, and hundreds of simultaneous users saturate under-specified core switches. Without high-capacity 10GbE uplinks and a non-blocking switching fabric, the core becomes the network's single biggest bottleneck.

VLAN Segmentation Complexity

Enterprises need separate network segments for HR, Finance, Guest Wi-Fi, IP CCTV, VoIP, and IoT devices. Unmanaged switches cannot support VLANs, leading to flat networks where any compromised device can reach all other systems on the same floor or building.

Multi-Building Campus Connectivity

Copper Ethernet is limited to 100 meters. Multi-floor office towers, hospital campuses, university buildings, and industrial facilities require fiber optic backbone links between floors and buildings to deliver gigabit and 10-gigabit speeds across large distances.

Network Downtime and No Failover

A single switch failure without redundancy brings down an entire floor or department. Enterprise operations cannot afford this. Without link aggregation, RSTP loop protection, and redundant uplinks, a single hardware failure causes hours of unplanned downtime.

Scalability as the Organization Grows

Networks designed for current headcount without modular growth planning become obstacles in 18 months. Under-specified distribution switches require complete replacement when port counts are exceeded, adding unbudgeted infrastructure costs and operational disruption.

No Centralised Network Visibility

Without managed switching and SNMP monitoring, IT teams have no real-time visibility into port status, traffic utilization, or device connectivity. Every fault requires manual floor-by-floor investigation, significantly increasing mean time to resolution for network incidents.

Our Architecture

AE Connect Enterprise Network Architecture

We architect enterprise LANs across three defined layers using purpose-built AE Connect managed switching hardware, fiber backbone solutions, and certified structured cabling - all designed to work together as a unified system.

Access Layer

PoE+ Managed Access Switches

Managed PoE+ switches at the access layer power and connect desktops, IP phones, wireless APs, IP cameras, and IoT devices via a single Cat6 cable. 802.1X port authentication, port security, and per-VLAN assignment enforce access control at the point of connection.

Distribution Layer

Layer 3 Distribution Switches

Managed L3 switches at the distribution layer handle inter-VLAN routing, QoS policy enforcement, and aggregation of multiple access-layer uplinks over fiber. OSPF or static routing, IGMP snooping, and bandwidth shaping ensure every department gets guaranteed, prioritized throughput.

Core Layer

High-Speed Fiber Core Switching

AE Connect fiber core switches with 10GbE SFP+ ports aggregate all distribution uplinks at wire speed. Non-blocking switching fabric, link aggregation (LACP), and redundant fiber ring topologies deliver high-availability core performance for the entire campus network.

Physical Layer

Cat6A and Fiber Structured Cabling

AE Connect Cat6A structured cabling forms the 10GbE-ready horizontal backbone to every endpoint. Single-mode and multimode fiber optic cabling with pre-terminated assemblies and patch panels connect floors and buildings with the reliability that every enterprise deployment demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A Layer 2 (L2) switch operates at the data link layer and handles MAC address-based forwarding within VLANs. It supports VLAN creation, QoS, port security, and SNMP but cannot route traffic between different VLANs - that requires a router or L3 switch. A Layer 3 (L3) switch adds hardware-based IP routing capabilities, enabling inter-VLAN routing, static routes, and dynamic routing protocols like OSPF without requiring a dedicated router at the distribution layer. For enterprise networks, L2 switches are deployed at the access layer and L3 switches handle the distribution and core layers where cross-VLAN traffic must be routed efficiently at wire speed.
The number of users per switch depends on port count and how many devices each user connects. AE Connect managed switches are available in 8, 16, 24, and 48-port configurations. In practice, a 48-port access switch typically serves 40 to 45 wired endpoints per floor after reserving ports for uplinks and APs. For wireless deployments, each AP may serve 20 to 50 users wirelessly while consuming one wired port on the switch. For enterprises with high-density wireless environments, the key constraint is not port count but bandwidth - which is why 10GbE uplinks on the distribution layer are recommended for any deployment with more than 200 concurrent users per building.
Fiber is recommended in the following enterprise scenarios:
  • Any cable run exceeding 100 meters - copper Ethernet cannot reliably deliver Gigabit or 10GbE beyond this distance
  • Inter-floor riser cables in multi-storey buildings - multimode OM3/OM4 fiber handles distances up to 300 meters at 10GbE
  • Inter-building campus backbone links - single-mode OS2 fiber supports up to 20 kilometers at Gigabit and 10GbE speeds
  • Environments with high electromagnetic interference such as factory floors, electrical rooms, and areas near heavy machinery
  • Future-proofing - fiber backbone infrastructure installed today can support 100GbE and beyond with only SFP module upgrades
AE Connect Fiber Switches and Media Converters cover all these use cases with both single-mode and multimode fiber options.
A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) creates logical network segments within a single physical switch or network infrastructure. Instead of running separate physical cables for Finance, HR, Guest Wi-Fi, IP CCTV, VoIP, and IoT devices, VLANs segment all of these onto the same physical infrastructure while keeping their traffic completely isolated from each other. Enterprise networks need VLANs for three critical reasons:
  • Security: A compromised device on the Guest Wi-Fi VLAN cannot reach servers or endpoints on the Finance VLAN
  • Performance: Broadcast traffic from one department does not flood the entire network, reducing unnecessary congestion
  • Compliance: Regulatory requirements for PCI-DSS, HIPAA, and ISMS often mandate network segmentation between payment, clinical, and general-purpose systems
All AE Connect managed switches support IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging with port-based and tag-based VLAN assignment.
Common enterprise devices that require PoE+ power include wireless access points (8 to 25W), IP desk phones (3 to 7W), IP cameras (5 to 30W), video conferencing endpoints (25 to 30W), and smart building IoT sensors (3 to 10W). To size the PoE budget for an access switch, add up the maximum power draw of all connected PoE devices and add a 20 to 25% overhead buffer. For example, a 24-port switch serving 20 access points at 15W each, 4 IP cameras at 15W each, and 10 IP phones at 5W each requires a minimum PoE budget of 20x15 + 4x15 + 10x5 = 410W including overhead. AE Connect managed PoE+ switches are available with total PoE budgets from 120W to 370W per unit to match every deployment scenario.
High availability in enterprise LANs is achieved through multiple complementary mechanisms available on AE Connect managed switches:
  • Link Aggregation (LACP 802.3ad): Bond two or four uplink ports between access and distribution switches for both redundancy and increased bandwidth
  • RSTP and MSTP: Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol eliminates switching loops while converging alternate paths in under one second if a primary link fails
  • Redundant fiber ring topology: Create a ring of fiber switches with automatic failover so any single fiber link break does not disconnect any segment
  • Dual uplinks from critical switches: Access switches serving mission-critical areas should have two separate uplinks to two different distribution switches
  • Redundant power: Use switches with dual power supply inputs in critical IDF and MDF locations to eliminate power as a single point of failure
Yes. AE Connect provides a complete, end-to-end enterprise networking solution covering every layer of the infrastructure. Our product portfolio includes access-layer managed PoE+ switches, distribution and core Layer 3 switches, fiber core switches with 10GbE SFP+ ports, fiber media converters for copper-to-fiber conversion, Cat6 and Cat6A structured horizontal cabling, fiber optic riser and campus backbone cabling, and passive components including patch panels and keystone jacks. This means every component from the wall outlet to the core switch can be sourced from a single vendor with a unified warranty, consistent quality, and full cross-layer technical accountability.
